It’s time to clear the air. They are NOT the same, so please stop telling people with depression to “cheer up”.
The misconception of depression is a-l-a-r-m-i-n-g. A lot of people don’t understand what depression is, what it feels like, or what it looks like. The only way to fix this, is by discussing it with people who actually experience it. Here are 3 things about depression that are important to know.
1. Depression is NOT sadness.
- If I had a penny for every time someone told me to “cheer up” or “just smile”, I wouldn’t have to pay my student loans. No one is perfect. Even my mom has done this one before.
